Q&A: Leon Oldstrong
Leon Oldstrong is a London-based filmmaker known for blending social commentary with bold genre storytelling. His short The Lies of Our Confines follows a group of Black British teens on a Highlands retreat that takes a sinister turn when they discover a haunted corn doll. With a mix of horror and humour, the film explores identity, masculinity and belonging, bringing fresh voices to a genre that often leaves them out. As Love Horror put it, Leon “challenges the traditional portrayal of Black characters in horror… giving them depth and agency”. Leon is all about bringing Black stories right to the heart of genre cinema; it’s about storytelling that provokes, connects and reflects lived experience and reframes who gets to take centre stage in these stories.
