At The New Black Film Collective, we believe in the power of cinema to spark dialogue, deepen understanding and empower communities. Our Black History Month events create space for reflection, celebration and action.
This year, we are developing a focused programme on Nigerian auteur-driven films set in Lagos, offering a range of films that highlight the Nigerian capital through an authentic and independent lens. Our wider programme covers films from all over the Black Diaspora, joining the festival’s themes of treating locations, nations, and stories through the hypersensitivity they deserve. Panel discussions paired with our screenings will allow us to delve into how neighbourhoods, cities and provenance can help creatives bring their stories and homes to the big screen.
PAST EVENTS
Since 2015, we’ve hosted Black History Month events rooted in community, culture and connection. Each year, we spotlight culturally significant films, inviting filmmakers, artists, academics, and local changemakers to join us in conversation.
Over the years, we’ve welcomed an incredible range of talent, including cultural icon Victor Romero Evans, pionerring academic Lez Henry, acclaimed actress Cathy Tyson, Jazz re:freshed co-founder Justin McKenzie, the dynamic IROKO Theatre Company, and influential voices such as Sabrina Fearon Melville, Amanda Bright, and Dr Kewesa John.
Our 2025 “Black identity and strength” programme traveled across and even outside of London to bring free community film screenings to Tower Hamlets, Newham, Barking and Dagenham and Manchester. Our screenings included 40 Acres, A Story Left Behind, ERNEST COLE: Left Behind, Fatherless No More, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, Bob Marley: One Love and Sinners, each followed by an individual Q&A panel or workshop.

The New Black Film Collective offers curated Black History Month experiences that use film as a catalyst for learning, reflection and discussion. Our events celebrate Black history, culture and achievement while creating space for thoughtful dialogue, shared understanding and authentic engagement within the workplace.
Available formats include curated short film programmes, documentary screenings, and feature film screenings.
