The Story of Lover’s Rock

Lovers Rock is a captivating exploration of the unique Black British sound that emerged during the late 1970s and 80s, set against a backdrop of riots, racial tensions, and the vibrant energy of sound systems. Often referred to as “romantic reggae,” Lovers Rock became a powerful outlet for young people seeking intimacy and healing through dance—a spirited movement known as “scrubbing”—at parties and clubs. This electrifying dance scene provided a crucial coping mechanism for the struggles unfolding on the streets, allowing communities to unite in celebration and resilience. With its infectious rhythms and heartfelt lyrics, Lovers Rock not only produced national UK hits but also profoundly influenced iconic British bands like The Police, Culture Club, and UB40. The film delves into this overlooked era of British music, revealing how Lovers Rock bridged cultural divides and became a vital force in the social and political landscape of its time. Prepare to be transported to a vibrant world where music and dance intertwined, leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of British history.

TNB BHM 2024 - The Battle for Laikipia + Q&A

In celebration of Black History Month, The New Black Film Collective presents a screening of -

THE BATTLE FOR LAIKIPIA (2024)

In Kenya's Laikipia County, climate change, alongside unresolved historical injustices, escalate tensions in a long-standing dispute between the region's Indigenous pastoralists and white ranchers.

Severe droughts have intensified the conflict over the use of Laikipia’s historically rich but declining grassland – an issue deeply embedded in the country’s colonial past. Filmmakers Daphne Matziaraki and Peter Murimi set out to understand both sides of the fight, from the pastoralist herding community struggling to feed their cattle to the white owners of the county’s private ranches who are determined to guard their territory. A complex picture emerges of a region in crisis, with the filmmakers navigating the tensions around the livelihoods of Indigenous farmers, land ownership, wildlife conservation, national politics, and the bitter legacy of British settler rule. The Battle for Laikipia provides a poignant and unflinching examination of the increasingly contentious issues surrounding land and power in an era of profound climate change.

Content Guidance: Film contains scene depicting animal death.

Babylon is an electrifying journey into the life of David, a talented musician navigating the gritty streets of 1980s South West London. By day, he toils as a mechanic; by night, he ignites the local dance hall, bringing raw energy to the sound system scene. But beneath the vibrant beats lies a city divided by racial tension, where opportunities for Black people are scarce and poverty looms large. As David’s world unravels—losing his job, being brutalized and charged by the police, and breaking up with his girlfriend—his simmering frustrations explode in a shocking act of defiance against a racist neighbor. TNB BHM 2024 - Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat + Q&A

In Celebration of Black History Month, The New Black Film Collective presents a screening of -

SOUNDTRACK TO A COUP D’ÊTAT (2024)

Patrice Lumumba became the first prime minister of newly independent Congo in 1960, only to be executed the following year. He had become the personification the growing Pan-African movement, which threatened Western hegemony on the African continent. Against this background, jazz music became a political tool.

Patrice Lumumba had alarmed Belgium and the United States with his assertions that Congo’s riches should belong to the country’s people. At the same time, it served as an inspiration for the American civil rights movement. Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat traces the budding hope that was emanating in the Global South and being felt in the West in 1960.

The film also delves into the way the CIA used Black American jazz artists, such as Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie, to promote America’s image abroad. As part of an African tour sponsored by the State Department and PepsiCo, Armstrong arrived in Congo in October 1960, a month after Lumumba’s overthrow. Were the musicians used as diversion?

In Celebration of Black History Month, The New Black Film Collective presents a screening of -

This original documentary featuring a murder, Cold War conspiracies, Black Power, the end of the Empire, and how that connects to the policing, surveillance practices, and social movements of today. This is the first film where Walter's widow reveals the personal impact on the family of Walter's assassination.

It feeds a growing global appetite for history from a different perspective, as we grapple with the legacy of empire and colonialism and its impact on the modern world. The documentary reveals that Dr. Walter Rodney was seen as subversive both as an academic and as an activist who supported anti-colonial movements and civil rights.

Black Joy

Black Joy is a vibrant and witty 1977 British film that captures the chaotic journey of a young Guyanese immigrant, Ben, trying to find his way in the bustling streets of Brixton. Arriving in London with dreams of an easier life, he finds himself caught in a whirlwind of mishaps and misadventures. His troubles are largely fueled by Dave (played by Norman Beaton from popular TV show Desmonds), a street-smart, “assimilated” Caribbean con artist who leads him into one fiasco after another. Adapted from the stage play Dark Days and Light Nights by Jamal Ali and showcased at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival, Black Joy is a cleverly ironic yet poignant look at the immigrant experience.
