Straw (2025) is a thought-provoking emotional thriller, highlighting the struggle of Black Americans. Though at times the storyline felt somewhat disjointed, what held the film together was Taraji P. Henson’s powerful portrayal of the weight carried by Black women, particularly single mothers. The cinematography, with its use of muted tones, effectively captured this emotional heaviness. 

Despite its strong cast and promising storyline, the film ultimately fell short. It attempted to tackle too many themes, leaving some plotlines feeling unrealistic or leaning into caricatures of the “ghetto”.
