Head Way: Better careers pathways and equity for Black teachers
About Head Way
With support from Trust for London’s Racial Justice Fund, The New Black Film Collective launch Head Way, a project to close the discriminatory gap faced by Black teachers.
Over 18 months and working in partnership with Black Teachers Connect, National Educators Union and UCL East, we carried out research among Black teachers using their findings to lobby government and influence policy, as well as documenting the highs and lows of being a Black teacher in the UK.
Priscilla Igwe, founder of The New Black Film Collective said “For ten years, The New Black Film Collective has been working in schools on film projects and screening films, so we know some of the issues Black teachers are facing such as lack of pay parity with their non-Black colleagues, limited career progression and discrimination.
With this funding from The Racial Justice Fund, we were able to work with those teachers to understand more of their challenges and by using film to communicate we hope to compel the government to act immediately.”
HEAD WAY SUMMIT
Organised by The New Black Film Collective, supported by Trust for London, this summit connected teachers, assistants, leaders and professionals across the sector. Engage in networking, panel discussions and keynotes speeches to address challenges, share insights, and collaborate on strategies for positive change.
What we explored:
Forging connections amongst Black educators.
Discussing pay and progression challenges openly.
Sharing insights and best practices.
Collaborating on strategies for retention, training and promotion.
Formulating actionable recommendations.

Students, professionals, policymakers and the curious joined us on Saturday 29 June 2024 at Loughborough University London, E20 3BS from 9am to 5pm.
