Mortu Nega (1988) is hailed as one of the first films made and shown in an independent Guinea-Bissau. Directed by Flora Gomes, it is an incredible story that follows Diminga – a young soldier’s wife, as she strives to be reunited with her husband throughout the War of Independence, and then contends with rebuilding their life and relationship in the immediate aftermath. It is a harrowing chronicle on the political complexities faced by many African nations during their battles for independence.
