About

At The New Black Film Collective (TNBFC) we exist to create and cultivate a vibrant Black ecosystem in the UK screen industries by championing Black-led film production, distribution, exhibition and preserving Black filmmaking and television.

We do this with a range of activities and events each year, many of which have partnership opportunities attached.

The company was incorporated in 2013, by a select number of Black-led organisations (including Black Film Festival Wales, Screen Nation, Black History Studies, Anointed Productions, Images of Black Women, Nollywood Now, Caribbean UK Film Festival and more) after some of them completed a cultural leadership training programme called The New Black supported by Film London in response to the neglect of the Black exhibition sector.

We partner with allies and progressive organisations to ensure opportunities for Black creatives are available, accessible and equitable. We have grown our offer and services over the years to encompass:

  • a membership service for Black-led film organisations or allies offering peer-to-peer networking, support, skills development and raising awareness for Black-led film.

  • industry events, such as our annual TNB XPO borne out of a need to counter systemic racism and exclusion. It is our flagship event, attracting over 300 Black creatives to a symposium in London, and many hundreds more online.

  • public screenings, preview screenings and events in UK cinemas all of which foreground Black led film and create a place for discussion and community.

  • our team handle PR campaigns for UK cinema and home entertainment releases of Black film content. Previous titles include Nanny, Queen & Slim, The Last Tree, Hero and Sorry To Bother You.

  • skills development and education programmes for Black creatives in film and TV to learn new skills or hone their practice as well as programmes that create career pathways into the sector.

  • we distribute Black-led film to UK exhibitors which tell untold stories of Black lives, titles to date include Dear White People.

Ambition

We want to see a vibrant Black ecosystem in the UK film and TV sector.

A Black ecosystem is a community within the Black community that is financially self-sufficient and exists to empower Black individuals and Black-led organisations to thrive by supporting one another through peer-to-peer learning, skills sharing, investment and development opportunities.

From talent to production, distribution to exhibition and everything in between a Black ecosystem will support and empower Black people to begin their journey in film and TV, and work with Black-led film and TV organisations to develop new services or expand those they already offer such as mentorship, networking, production, exhibition and events.

A focus on diversity and inclusion in the UK film and TV industry isn’t just a moral imperative; it is essential to the financial growth of the sector and its standing on the international stage.
